A Year-Round Guide to Exciting Fruits at HEB Grocery Stores

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

As a fruit lover who is always on the lookout for exciting flavors, I often peruse HEB's produce section looking for what's new. They offer a wide selection of fruits year-round, and there's usually always something to be excited about.

If you also love trying something new, this year-round guide will help you discover unique and flavorful fruits that HEB has to offer. So, get ready to tantalize your taste buds with this guide to the best, and most unique seasonal fruits available at HEB Grocery Stores!

January

January kicks off Citrus Fest at Central Market, and HEB tends to celebrate as well by highlighting yummy citrus fruits. The Meyer Lemons make the most AMAZING lemon drops.

Here's what you can hope to find:

  • Meyer Lemons

  • Pink Lemons

  • Blood Oranges

  • Winter Pineberries

February

Kumquats can be found in the HEB produce section in February. They are citrusy, tarty, and sour, with a little sweetness. Pears are also in abundance this month and you can find some interesting varieties.

Here's what to look for:

  • Kumquats

  • Frieda's Mandarinquats

  • Arara Melon (Extra Sweet)

  • Mardi Gras Pears

  • Asian Pears

  • Sumo Citrus

  • Dino Melons

March

March brings kiwi and dragonfruit.

As a huge kiwi fan, I look forward to March every year. Kiwi Berries are sweet and citrusy, and the best part is, you don't have to peel them. I also don't think they have the same flavor depth as a regular kiwi, but they're still really fun to try!

Here's what you can hope to find:

- Kiwi Berries

- Red Kiwi

- Blood Oranges

- Dragonfruit

- Honey Dragonfruit

April

This year I spotted the Jicama display in April. If you're unfamiliar, Jicama is a staple in Mexican cuisine. Cut it up and add lime juice and chili powder.

Here's what else you can hope to find this month:

- Jicama

- Jackfruit

- Papaya from Mexico

May

The taste of yellow kiwi is smoother and sweeter than green. I'm a big fan of all Kiwi, so give these a try! They're packed full of Vitamin C.

June

In June, HEB rolls out their Dream Melons. These are all hybrids of a Tuscan cantaloupe melon, but they have distinct flavor differences. Sugar Rush is my favorite, sweet and flavorful, Summer Gem tastes like a sweeter cantaloupe and Lemon Pop is tarty and lemony.

Here's what to look for:

  • Dream Melons: Sugar Rush, Sumer Gem, Lemon Pop.

  • Donut Peaches

July

July is my favorite because the Sangria Plumcots are TO DIE FOR. They really do taste a bit like wine and are packed full of sweet and tarty flavors. Don't miss these this month!

Last year HEB also debuted the cherry berry trio in July. It's a little pricey, but it gives you a good sample of each fruit - cherries, strawberries, and blueberries, without making you purchase a massive bag of each.

What to look for:

  • Sangria Plumcots

  • Cherry Plums

  • Cherry Berry Trio

  • Hydroponic Strawberries

August

Last August the Texas-Sized Watermelons popped up out front of my HEB. Everything's bigger in Texas!

What to look for:

  • Watermelons everywhere

  • Cotton Candy Grapes

October

Last October I picked up a TikTok famous Cherimoya at HEB. They look like dragon eggs from Game of Thrones and they're expensive. I think I paid around $8 for mine. It's supposed to taste like heaven. Some say a mix between a pineapple, banana, strawberry, papaya, and peach.

I got confusing directions from a YouTube video and waited too long to crack it open, so unfortunately mine tasted terrible - womp womp. But I hope to give it another go this Fall because it's supposed to be quite delightful.

November

Pummelos or pomelos are like giant grapefruits, but they tend to be a bit sweeter and have a milder taste compared to the super sour flavor of a grapefruit. I spotted them in November at my local HEB.

December

December (and sometimes end of November) brings the Honey Drop Mandarins - and these are not to be missed! They have a juicy sweet-tart flavor and are less acidic than other mandarins.

Here's what you can hope to find:

  • Honey Drop Mandarins

  • Kishu Kisses Mandarins

  • Pomegranates

And that's a wrap! What did I miss? Let me know in the comments.

Note: This is not meant as a guide to everything in season or everything available, but it is a collection of the most interesting finds I've noted on my social media over the last year.
